I. Installation
Q. Where do I find the Site Measurement code? A. The code is available via the Site Measurement Web site (http://clients.LiveAnalysis.com). Log in with your username and password. Then, click on "Get the Code" and copy and paste it into your pages.
Q. Can I place the counter anywhere on the page? A. We strongly recommend that you place the code for the counter at the bottom of the page, just above the closing
tags; this will ensure that you get the most accurate measurements. However, the code for the counter can be placed anywhere between the opening
and closing
tags but not within script tags.
Q. Can I start the counter at a specific number? A. The foundation of Site Measurement is accuracy and precise metrics. Therefore we do not allow clients to begin their counting at a specific number that is not based on our measurement. Also, Site Measurement abides by international audit standards, and the system has been configured to recognize specific business rules - of which this is one. The rules were implemented to comply with industry audit standards in the interests of creating an objective, fair, and unbiased third-party measurement service.
Q. How do I set up the Internal Traffic Monitoring feature? A. For Site Measurement to separate your internal impressions from those outside of your organization, you must supply your IP Address and/or Internal Subnet Mask when you register your site. The fields for both functions are provided when you add a site, or can be accessed at anytime through the Account Management System.
Q. I have entered what I thought is my IP address to keep an internal record, but nothing is being recorded. How do I find the correct IP address to enter? A. If you are running Windows, go to the "Start" button and then go to "Run." This will bring up your dos prompt window. Type ipconfig, and you will be given your IP address. For Macintosh users, go to the Apple menu. Under the control panel, go to TCP/IP and you will see your address.
Q. I entered the wrong email address when registering. How do I change it? A. Use the (incorrect email) address that you registered to login at clients.LiveAnalysis.com. Make the necessary changes within the account management system by clicking "Company Details." After you have updated your information, hit "Submit." The changes will be automatically updated. Next time you log in, use the correct, updated email address.
Q. I placed the Site Measurement code and the counter on the page, but visits are not being recorded. Why? A. There are three possible causes: 1) The code has not been correctly inserted on the HTML pages of your site. It must be inserted exactly as per the code you receive from Site Measurement, inclusive of line-breaks. 2) The URL registered with Site Measurement does not correspond to the URL of the pages where you've loaded our code. 3) It's too soon to see the visits recorded. Note that Site Measurement statistics take up to four (4) hours before they are reflected.
If both the code and the registered URL are correct, but your visits are still not being recorded, mail us at support@liveanalysis.com and we will create a technical ticket to examine the problem and respond to you within 48 hours.
Q. Can I set up Site Measurement so that the public can view my stats? A. No. Site Measurement does not feature the ability to make your statistics visible to the public. We recommend either creating a Web page with a GIF or JPEG snapshot image of your Site Measurement stats. Or, if you are looking to provide advertisers with audited stats, create a (temporary) guest login by adding a user to allow a third party to access your stats.
Q. When I first installed Site Measurement I received my stat results with no problem, but it suddenly stopped working. What's wrong and how do I fix it? A. The first thing to check is the HTML page where the Site Measurement code was inserted. Make sure the code is still there. If the problem persists, you can contact us at support@LiveAnalysis.com and we can audit your site for you.
Q. How do I remove the Site Measurement code from my page? A. If the code was inserted using the Site Measurement Installation Wizard, run the Installation Wizard software and select the "Remove Code" option. If you manually inserted the Site Measurement code, you can still use the Installation Wizard to remove the code. Alternatively, you can manually remove the code from your HTML page.
II. Functionality
Q. How does Site Measurement work? A. Site Measurement inserts a small piece of code on each Web page being tracked. When someone browsing the Web calls up that page, a signal is sent back to the Site Measurement server, which counts the signal as a visit to the page. The Site Measurement code is cache-inclusive, which means that a repeat request for a page that has already been viewed will still send a signal to the Site Measurement server, even though the page may be stored in a browser or firewall cache. Cache inclusive ensures that the data about activity on your site are as accurate as possible.
Q. Is Site Measurement P3P compliant? A. Yes. We meet all of W3C's P3P requirements and we are fully compliant with their Internet privacy standards. For more information please refer to our Privacy Statement and to W3C's P3P documentation.
Q. I have an ISP hosting my Web site; can I still use Site Measurement? A. In order for Site Measurement to track a page, it has to be placed on the source HTML code. You may have to contact your ISP and have them deploy the code for you.
Q. Does it matter what type of browser I use to access my stats? A. Site Measurement is optimized for Internet Explorer browsers, version 5 or above. However, it is possible to access your statistics with Netscape, version 4 or above.
Q. Can Site Measurement track Web sites with multiple domains or pages and sites that refer to another site? A. Yes - Enterprise subscribers may register multiple domains. Each separate domain needs to be registered with Site Measurement. All pages below these domains will be counted if they contain the Site Measurement code. Multiple domains can be registered through the Account Management System.
Q. Is there a limit on the number of domains that can be registered under one account? A. Site Measurement's Enterprise service allows clients to register 100 domains and establish 50 groups. It is possible to add more sites or groups, but each addition is subject to a surcharge. The Standard service allows only one site to be registered.
Q. Does Site Measurement count the number of click throughs for advertisements posted on the site? A. LiveAnalysis offers a service, Campaign Analysis, which tracks, reports, and analyzes in real-time the performance of web-based marketing campaigns, regardless of where the Web campaign is seen. For more information, please contact a Sales Representative at support@LiveAnalysis.com or call 1866 392 3044.
Q. Does Site Measurement just measure outside visitors to the site or internal traffic (company-affiliated) activity as well? A. Site Measurement can keep a separate count of page impressions from internal (company-affiliated) visitors. The internal IP address of the company must be specified in the site registration details. Conversely, a company can block impressions from their internal network by supplying the Internal Subnet Mask.
Q. Does Site Measurement use cookies? A. All users who visit a measured site receive a name-value pair cookie from Site Measurement. A name-value pair is simply a named piece of data. It is not a program, and it cannot "do" anything. A Web site can retrieve only the information that it has placed on your machine. It cannot retrieve information from other cookie files, nor any other information from your machine. The Site Measurement system assigns a unique ID value, which is only used to identify return machines. No personally identifiable information is exchanged with us.
Q. Does Site Measurement track actual email addresses of site visitors? A. No. Site Measurement does not track email addresses. To view our entire privacy policy, please navigate to www.LiveAnalysis.com/Privacy.
Q. How can I tell if a user is a unique visitor, since a machine's IP address can change daily? A. Site Measurement does not rely on IP addresses to identify unique visitors. Our proprietary technology lets us distinguish between new and repeat visitors regardless of the IP address by recognizing individual machines.
Q. How long does it take for a visitor to appear as a statistic on a site profile? A. Once the registration process has been completed, it takes approximately one hour for statistics to reflect but it can take up to four (4) hours before reports are available.
Q. How will Site Measurement differentiate between the home page and the other pages/other sites to be monitored since I post the same HTML code on each page? A. Site Measurement differentiates pages by URLs, not by the code placed on pages. The URLs individualize each page for measurement.
Q. Will this service run on Macintosh? A. Yes. Site Measurement is platform-independent, and works on all platforms that Web pages are viewed or delivered from.
Q. How does Site Measurement determine a user's country of origin? A. Site Measurement's visitor country-of-origin service is unique to the Web analytics industry. Site Measurement forged an alliance with geomapping firm Digital Envoy to provide real time geographically discrete visitor data to Site Measurement subscribers. Digital Envoy has very high visitor location resolution in the U.S. (where Digital Envoy will soon offer visitor location broken out by state), as well as Western Europe. Firms competing with Site Measurement utilize a technique known as reverse DNS lookup to infer a visitor's geographical location. This is a notoriously unreliable methodology with error rates ranging from 40 to 60 percent. For more information on Digital Envoy, please go to www.DigitalEnvoy.com. Please note, GeoData is a value-added module. Enterprise subscribers may add GeoData by contacting the Site Measurement team at support@LiveAnalysis.com or 1-866-392-3044.
Q. Is it possible to see the address of a visitor? If so, how is it applied? A. Every computer on the Internet is identified by a unique number called an IP address. Each time you connect to the Internet your machine is assigned an IP address. If you have a static IP address, you get the same number each time you connect. If you have a dynamic IP address, a number is assigned from a pool if addresses maintained by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) on a first-come basis. Thus you can get a different IP address each time you connect. IP addresses are not personally identifiable information and we do not have the ability to determine your identity based upon your IP address. Local area network (LAN) or cable modem users may permanently be assigned a specific IP address, which is associated to a particular computer or other device connected to that network. Anytime you connect to a site on the Internet, the computers communicating with each other exchange IP addresses. IP addresses can reveal what part of the world you're connecting from, or which Internet Service Provider you are using - never who you are. Site Measurement does not report the IP addresses of users visiting your Web site as the vast majority of visitors accessing the Internet do so through an ISP that dynamically allocates IP addresses.
Q. Will Site Measurement slow down page loading time? A. Site Measurement does not slow down your pages because the proprietary code has a very small footprint-approximately 480 bytes. Also, because the Site Measurement code is placed at the bottom of the page, it allows the page to be fully visible in the browser, while the request to measure is being sent to our server.
Q. Will Site Measurement work in CGI generated pages? A. Yes. Site Measurement is able to measure all dynamically generated pages, as long as the code is included in the HTML that is delivered to the end user by the CGI generator. Ideally, the code should be placed directly before the end tag.
III. Maintenance
Q. What do I do if I forget my login name, password, or both? A. Send an email to support@LiveAnalysis.com. We will need to validate that you are the authorized contact for the account, so please include your Username, which allows us to easily connect you with the account. Remember: Usernames are email addresses - there is a very good chance that if you use the password reminder function with your email address - the reminder will prompt your password.
Q. I have changed my Web site address. How do I apply Site Measurement to this new address? A. If your original domain has accrued page and visitor counts, you must separately list the new domain name. This can be done by logging into the account management section and click on "Add a Site." Then create a group with the two registered domains to aggregate the stats. We require the above process to ensure that one domain cannot increment counts for another. Site Measurement abides by international audit standards and the system has been configured to recognize specific business rules of which this is one. These rules were implemented to comply with industry audit standards in the interests of creating an objective, fair, and unbiased third-party measurement service.
Q. How do I register a second Web site to use Site Measurement? A. You must be an Enterprise subscriber to have access to this functionality. When you log onto Site Measurement, click the "Add a Site" link located under "Site & Group Setup" on the left-hand navigation. Add the URL and insert the same code into the HTML pages of the new site.
Q. I have two URLs that point to the same place. What do I need to do to use Site Measurement? A. The Enterprise service accounts for duplicated reporting across multiple URLs. You simply have to enter in both URLs using the "Advanced Options" link when you are adding the sites to your account.
Q. Is it possible to look at and change the profile of my account? A. Yes. You can access your account through the client login at http://clients.LiveAnalysis.com and make the relevant changes through the account management system.
IV. Reading Your Stats:
Q. Where do I find my site statistics? A. You can access your statistics through the client login at http://clients.LiveAnalysis.com. This takes you to your account summary page with all your statistics.
Q. How often are the statistics updated? A. Site Measurement updates its stats and reports every 60 minutes.
Q. How long does will my data be stored? A. Site Measurement will store, archive, and track all your statistics as long as you are a client.
Q. Is there any way that I can tell if Site Measurement is working on my site besides looking at the statistics? A. No. If the Site Measurement code is correctly set up, you can only know that it is functioning by viewing your statistics. However, if you need confirmation, you can contact your sales representative or email us support@LiveAnalysis.com.
Q. What is the difference between hits and page impressions? A. A page impression is a combination of one of more files sent to a user via that user's request. A hit is a single file request from a Web server. A page is made up of several hits; for instance, each graphic image is a hit.
Q. Why are the numbers for page impressions significantly different between default.htm and index.htm? They both point to my homepage. A. Default.htm is the page the homepage that people will see if they type your homepage into a browser, for example www.LiveAnalysis.com, is the default, as opposed to the index page, which can only be reached by typing out the entire URL: www.LiveAnalysis.com/index.htm
Q. What is a session? A. A session is a collection of page turns on the same site by one user. The session starts on the first page turn on a site, and the session ends when the browser leaves the domain.
